ABOUT

What is a Fractional CMO?

When small to medium sized business go through a period of growth, they often find themselves in a position where they need marketing leadership and insight. However, they don’t quite have the budget to pay $150,000 per year or more for a full-time CMO in addition to the necessary employees to execute on a marketing plan. Working with a fractional CMO can offer extreme savings and allow for the addition of in-house or agency talent. This can provide the business with the benefits of a clear strategy and execution without breaking the budget.

A fractional Chief Marketing Officer (fCMO) is a part-time, outsourced position who acts as the marketing executive for a business without committing to the cost of a full-time, in-house role.

Priorities of the fractional CMO include developing and managing the company’s marketing strategy, building a marketing team, overseeing the budget, and monitoring KPIs in order to make adjustments along the way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A fractional CMO focuses on solving larger problems. This is not a person you hire to publish content, write emails, or manage your social media. A fractional CMO will help you determine your overall marketing strategy and what you should do to execute. This includes creating an overall marketing plan, building and leading a marketing team, managing the company brand marketing efforts, your channel marketing strategies, and reporting on the results.

A fractional CMO is an independent contractor you hire for a set amount of time to help you solve your biggest marketing problems. Our offerings span 3, 6, and 12 months with options for single or half day sessions.

This all depends on what you need accomplished and, of course, what you can afford. Remember, this is an individual who will be working on your biggest road blocks to company growth. If you were to get past those roadblocks, how much revenue will that bring in? From that number, determine what your gross margin is and how much of that you are willing to spend to achieve that revenue. 10% is a common benchmark but every company is different.

We may be biased but, YES! Most small to medium sized businesses don’t have the budget to hire a full-time CMO in the range of 6 figures. A fractional CMO can help you achieve results without the full-time bill.

Not only is a fractional CMO more affordable, they are also an excellent way to get an outside perspective. If you’re a business owner, it can be difficult to see what really needs to be done. Fractional CMOs also bring in a wealth of experience and knowledge of marketing you won’t get by simply hiring a marketing manager or social media specialist. Those roles are tactical. For them to work, you need a solid strategy to guide their work.

Every agency is different but, in our experience, they only focus on a specific area or tactic of marketing. For example, an email marketing agency is going to know when to send emails, which subject lines motivate people to open emails, and how to get people to click. Your brand elements, brand voice, image guidelines, and—most importantly—your target market all comes from a clearly defined strategy. Many agencies may offer to help with a strategy but they’re going to be focused on checking the boxes to get the emails sent. A fractional CMO will help you develop a “30,000 foot view” which creates efficiency across your marketing tactics saving you time and money.
